ImageJ РµСљвЂ 4 runs on Linux, Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, Windows, and the Sharp Zaurus PDA.

User-written plugins make it possible to solve almost any image processing or analysis problem. Custom acquisition, analysis and processing plugins can be developed using ImageJ's РµСљвЂ 4 built in editor and Java compiler. ImageJ РµСљвЂ 4 was designed with an open architecture that provides extensibility via Java plugins. Density or gray scale calibration is also available. Spatial calibration is available to provide real world dimensional measurements in units such as millimeters. The program supports any number of windows (images) simultaneously, limited only by available memory. All analysis and processing functions are available at any magnification factor. Image can be zoomed up to 32:1 and down to 1:32. It does geometric transformations such as scaling, rotation and flips. It supports standard image processing functions such as contrast manipulation, sharpening, smoothing, edge detection and median filtering.

It can create density histograms and line profile plots. It can calculate area and pixel value statistics of user-defined selections. It is multithreaded, so time-consuming operations such as image file reading can be performed in parallel with other operations. It supports 'stacks', a series of images that share a single window. It can read many image formats including TIFF, GIF, JPEG, BMP, DICOM, FITS and 'raw'. It can display, edit, analyze, process, save and print 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit images. It runs, either as an online applet or as a downloadable application, on any computer with a Java 1.1 or later virtual machine.

Also, there is no help file available and the interface could had been better organized in order to navigate easily.Р”Р„ll in all, ImageJ has some interesting features for a graphic editing tool but some of them require some experience in the domain. On the other hand, it popped up an error every time we exited the program because it couldn't save our preferences. The image editor uses a very high amount of system resources and didn't freeze or crash during our tests. Plus, you can apply various filters like Gaussian blur, unsharp mask and variance, use batch tools for measurements, conversion, macro or virtual stack, subtract the background, analyze particles, view a histogram, capture the screen, and many others. Plus, you can fill or draw within a selection, create a mask, as well as rotate or enlarge the image.Р”Р‡urthermore, you can configure options when it comes to the line width, fonts, arrow, hand or point tool, colors, appearance, and others.Р”Р„dditionally, you can adjust the brightness, contrast and color balance, merge or split channels, add a slice, create a new hyperstack, zoom in and out, as well as crop, duplicate, rename or scale the image. So, you can open samples and import image sequences, animated GIFs and others. You can import images by using the file browser or the 'drag and drop' method. It supports several formats, including JPEG, BMP, GIF and TIFF.
